Shane’s Daily List of Domains at Auction for Friday, March 17th, 2023

I’m not one to give my daughter big talks. I’ve never pretended that my experiences growing up a male was the same as growing up a female. I would rather show her through my actions. Setting norms. Normal for your parents to get up at 4:15 to get some exercise. Normal to travel around the world because its better to see history that to read about it. That money can get you nice things but experiences don’t all have to be expensive.

The ONLY thing that I always harped on was don’t build a bag of excuses. So many people make excuses as to why they did or didn’t do things. When she knew things were going to be difficult she seem to start preparing reasons why she wasn’t going to do well. I called it filling up her bad of excuses to draw from. It was easy to spot. A big race coming up would always have some kind of potential injury the week before. A test could have an illness. It was mentally easier for her to have a reason why it didn’t go well just in case it didn’t. It was a coping mechanism.

It was something I worked on. Letting her know that doing poorly was completely fine. Some excuses were fine. Saying you didn’t train as hard as you needed that season to be up in the front of the race is completely fine. That’s not a knock on the training, it’s merely sharing the knowledge that you understand what it takes to be in the front, the middle or the back. I was always good with a “I didn’t study hard enough” when a bad grade came. Although her bad grade was an A- because I was smart enough to have tutors because I’m not good past 5th grade homework.

We’re still working on those excuses, even as a 23-year-old but she is terrific about knowing why she gets results and what actions yield results without bringing in 3rd party reasons. Knowing it’s ok to say, I’m not good enough today. Or I’m not feeling this today. That is life and not every day can be special or it won’t be a special day. Great moments don’t come with every attempt so enjoy the moment, the training, the studying, and the learning. The journey. Don’t create a why things happened. They are a result of actions in advance and our only job is to figure out if the actions in advance achieved the results expected. If they did then move along. She has and it made the pressure of life much easier.
