We now have the privilege of witnessing the most talented people in the world showcase their skills. We can enjoy their talents and be thankful that we can see them from the comfort of our own homes. We can either be upset that we are not as good as them or enjoy all the talents they have. The same goes for beauty. It takes age and experience to realize that there will always be someone who is better or “prettier,” and that is okay. We should accept what God has given us and focus on our strengths. Today’s technology makes it easier to improve our skills with more resources than ever. However, what has not changed is that hard work is essential for everything good. When we start with simple tools and no aids, it is easier to see how things work. Watching videos of people doing things can help us understand how to do it better, but it does not replace hard work.
I loved the fact that there were no refills on Coke when I was a kid. It was served before a meal, and it was a special treat. We would put our finger on the straw and put one drop at a time on our tongue so that it would last longer. I still think about that every time I get a drink. I love a Diet Coke, and I still consider it a treat. I appreciate the fact that there are refills because it reminds me that soda is a treat, and we should not take it for granted. It takes a lot of effort to teach our kids that just because something is plentiful, it does not mean it is not special.
Our kids start out going 180 mph, while we started at 50 mph. Now that we can go 180 mph, us older people appreciate all the technology and gifts that allow us to move so fast. Most of us older people also know how to go back to 50 mph. In my opinion, our job is not to berate new technology or say that things were better back in the day. Instead, I like to show people that everything around us are tools that make us better if we use them correctly. They are only bad if we use them in ways that hinder and harm us. Using them correctly, and it truly is the best time ever to be alive. It is like cursing; it is not for everyday use, but there are times when a curse word is perfect for a good joke or to emphasize a point. It is a great tool.
Therefore, let us not complain that today is not as good as the old days when, in reality, it is just harder work teaching our kids (and ourselves) how to manage all this goodness. A kid’s natural instinct walking into a candy store is to grab everything they can. Our hope as a parent is to raise that kid so they share the same excitement, and can enjoy all the wonderful goodness around them, but understand they only get a few things to take home. Life is a candy store, enjoy it, take a few things out of it each day
