I’m not sure how it morphed into what it is but now my dog HAS to go play fetch in the morning. Not after we get coffee or have breakfast. The moment we get up. The process is not your normal fetch. He doesn’t go get the ball and drop it. He won’t let it go until he sees another ball. It turns into crazy looking process of throwing the ball, he retrieves it ,and as he passes me in full stride he drops the ball at my feet (or 20 feet away sometimes) and I throw the next. Back and forth,back and forth. At 5:30 in the morning…..or sooner.
It’s nice in the summer. A little cooler than the day. Sun coming up. Winter? Dark. Cold. It quickly became noticeable that we couldn’t see the balls in the dark. The company Chucker evidently has another dog owner with this same issue because they make glow in the dark balls that are compatible with the throwing stick.
So every night before bed we gather the two glow balls and place them in a bowl we’ve set on a table lamp. Originally, we set them on lampshades but evidently light bulbs still get hot because the balls would melt a little. Thinking that light might still have a bulb from the Easy Bake Over or something. So balls in place, we can just turn on the lamp and they get a great glow in about 10 minutes.
With global warming we barely get any snow in Central Illinois so the early morning fetches go well. The glow balls are actually better than the regular balls. They have a hole in them that whistles and they light up the sky. Frank has no problem seeing them or finding them. In a little snow they light up so bright you can find them much easier than a regular ball. But you have to go when its dark.
Now we’re in the mountains for a while and it has 4 feet of snow. We’re fortunate we have a cleared-out area next to the house to play but you have to keep the ball in bounds. If it goes into the uncleared area you are now in 4 feet of snow and you most likely have given the ball to the Winter Gods. Not to be found until June. I’m pretty good with the throwing stick. Stacey? Let’s just say sometimes her throws look like 50 cents pregame first pitch. I looked out the window and only Frank’s head is sticking out of the snow. I’m pretty sure I know what happened. I’ve seen Stacey’s throws. Stacey is standing underneath trees which are the only areas that you can still see the ground and are not 4 feet deep. She has that look of someone that has lost their keys and they’re backtracking their steps.
Of course Frank isn’t giving up the ball until he finds the other ball. He’s plunging like a penguin into the deep snow trying to find it. They have 0% chance. Frank realizing he’s not going to find it gives up and drops the ball so at least he can continue chasing something. Stacey picks up the ball and overshoots the first baseman and throws it across the street into the 4 feet of snow on the opposite side. I thought I was going to pee my pants. Fortunately Frank was able to plunge in and find it but Stacey came in hot. She doesn’t like losing balls. I think it’s more about not liking to pay for new balls but either way losing a ball doesn’t sit well with her. I was grateful for the entertainment. She wasn’t having any of it and ordered me to search for the ball before the next 10 inches of snow we’re supposed to get tonight. I gave it a go but all I found was Frank had snuck in a poop under the tree while she was searching. So F for losing the ball, A for efficiency of getting things done while she searched
