Apologies again for missing the post on Wednesday. In Las Vegas for the D3 conference, a great group of OG domain investors and between the great conference and seeing old friends, time moved quickly. Incredible alpha and feedback that not only helps you be better at what you do, but hearing about their lives, and what they are up to, is my ideal place to be. I’ve known many of them for 15 years. We’re all still passionate about domain names and appreciate the opportunities it has brought us all.
One thing common topic in the private conversations were Godaddy’s issues. We all want them to succeed. We want to be their partner. Help them build, improve, and give tools that help us, help them. That being said, people are leaving in numbers I hadn’t heard before. For the first time, I think Godaddy is vulnerable. They are not too big to fail. They aren’t going to fail but they may start missing some financial numbers in the coming years. They are going to need partners. Using their size and scope in exchange for modern tools and products. When the new strings come they are an important provide,r but if they don’t have the domain management tools and UI UX that many new companies have. Thus opening a door that competitors are beginning to peek into. This conference was the first time I saw big domain investors moving names away. Prior they were merely putting new names into other registrars. Now they are starting to slowly move their portfolio over. Sure Godaddy makes their money on the “normies”. Value-added services and expiry. But even normies will see the sleek new tools from others and change over. I never root against Godaddy. They are a very important part of our ecosystem. Their expiry names are the lifeblood of all domain investors. But when I go to a conference full of new tech, and user experience talk, I can only think of our biggest players being left sitting on the porch in their rocking chair and they need to be out playing with the kids.
On a positive note. It was the first time EVER that I won every single thing I bet on. I bet against the White Sox and won all three bets. I bet one horse race and the horse won. $2070 in total. With crypto, I don’t have any urge to gamble since I am gambling every day on memes and other coins. It’s merely that the White Sox are so bad I knew they would lose at least 2 of 3. They gave it a go 2 of the nights but in typical fashion, blew it in the late innings. I already rock Sox plates on my car. Time to add a hat soon
