Shane’s Daily List of Domains at Auction for Friday, May 7th, 2021

Escrow.com

I talked about it a bit on twitter but Handshake domains still have a major flaw. While the strings or upper level TLDs are decentralized the sub domain that are being bought are not. They have to pay a renewal fee or they lose it. Add in the fact that the level above them is anonymous and decentralized. Do you want to build your company on a domain that is owned by a shadow with zero rules or regulations. You literally have nobody being accountable. That simply doesn’t work.

Anonymity is good but its really tough to do business with it. Love or hate Godaddy, despite what people say, they have rules and regulations to follow and you get to keep your domain if you pay your fee. Yes the Brent Oxley debacle put some fears into this idea but overall there is confidence. There are a lot of “they could” but those haven’t come in to play yet in the first 25 years. The people screaming they could have their own agenda to push.

What I have found is that most people looking for financial change have the most to gain if it does. Because they are not part of the current system and need the system to change in order for them to profit. That doesn’t mean the change would be a bad thing, it merely means that those that want change will be the first to point out errors.

I despise ICANN. Their wasteful spending and personal greediness is ridiculous. But there has to be some sort of governing body to protect consumers. It can’t be a free for all. There has to be accountability somewhere. In crypto it is the exchanges. They are regulated. In blockchain domains something similar will happen. There will be some legal backbone behind it. Otherwise the only secure way to do it is to buy the top level and build. Not building on someone else’s.

I am are sure smarter people than me have figured all this out. Steve Webb and Mike Carson are years ahead of everyone else. They are the ICANN of Handshake. And they are fantastic people and I consider them friends. They will figure all of this out. But I think we all agree there is still a lot to figure out.
