I had an amazing but exhausting day but nothing compared to my daughter. As I’ve pointed out many times we’ve come to Leadville Colorado until Mid July and the altitude is 11,000 feet. A person from Illinois needs to time to acclimate. I’ve been here a few weeks so I’m pushing it a little more. Today I did a 7 mile run with some pace and got a few miles under 7:30 pace which isn’t that easy here. Ran with my wife and dog and they both did great. Wife had to walk a little but understandable given the altitude. Then we went on a medium hike around a lake that was about 4 miles. Not too much elevation change but dog was pulling like he was leading a sled team. Too many smells, other dogs and moving rocks. He thinks they are balls and chases them. After a good lunch in Dillen we took Hagerman pass which cuts through the mountains. 3 hrs of beautiful terrain many don’t get to see because they don’t have 4 wheel drive.
Meanwhile Libby got up at 4 am and went and climbed Mt. Princeton. They were going to do Elbert, then changed to Harvard, then Princeton because we got a lot of snow the day before. She said because of the snow they had to go straight up and didn’t get the switchbacks they were hoping for. And then to keep from a steep drop back they took a ridgeline covered in snow and long sharp drops on both sides. All agreed not the smartest, safest way home in hind site.
By the time we all got home Libby was exhausted and already asleep and my wife and I were beat. Just the typical Fathers Day but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Hanging out with friends and family and doing fun, hard things that result in seeing things not everyone gets to see. Natural beauty and scenery that has to be earned.
