Anxiety is a bitch. It’s definitely a genetic trait but there is also no doubt that it can be amplified or muffled by your environment and your preparation. I have a simple measurement of anxiety. If you have a 15 minute event that is very important or difficult at 4pm, what does the rest of your day look like? For so many people the rest of the day is toast. The rest of the day is wasted all because of one 15 minute event that makes you not able to do anything well until its over. It lives rent free in your brain for hours, days. Losing sleep, losing productive time.
I’ve spent years trying to get rid of that problem and I found two ways to get rid of it. One, be COMPLETELY prepared for the 4 o’clock event. To the point where pretty much nothing can go wrong. When that happens it opens up the rest of the day. Two, compartmentalize. I realize in many cases its not healthy but I have become very good at packaging up fear and anxiety and putting it away until its time to deal with it. I use the same method to sleep. I haven’t missed more than a few hours sleep a year by knowing that I can’t do anything about what’s coming up so I put it in a package and go to sleep or go on with my day. I open it back up when I wake up or a few minutes before the event . I realize it doesn’t work for everyone and its taken me decades to make it work for me. I’ve gotten pretty done good at killing anxiety. Almost too good. I don’t give a shit about most things. 🙂
