Shane’s Daily List of Domains at Auction for Wednesday, April 5th, 2023

In the 90s, the owner of Arlington racetrack, Dick Duchossois, hired Bob McBride who hired me, to help improve the conditions in the backstretch of the track.  The backstretch is where everyone works with horses.  A high percentage actually live there.  Most of the residents and workers are immigrants. Early mornings, long days, hard work.

The problems in the backstretch were increasing every year.  Once racing was over there was a high propensity to drink. Understandably they had a high propensity to gamble as well.  All of which led to fights and other issues throughout the evening. Bob and Dick’s plan was simple.  Give them things to keep them busy.  Dick put up the money and Bob set up a plan.  A sports program.  Basketball, softball, soccer, volleyball, horseshoes and many more.  Anyone could form a team and it was free. Bingo and gameshow nights with nice prizes.  No drinking allowed at the events.  It was a huge success.  Even the jockeys formed a team and some of the most famous jockeys in the world played.

It taught me a huge life lesson.  Busy people are better people.  It’s in our nature to want to stay busy. Nobody is lazy by nature. Many of the residents of the backstretch had no interest in sport but as they started seeing their friends laughing and having fun they wanted to join.  They also saw that many people were terrible at the sports they were playing but nobody cared.  I saw some of the worst basketball and volleyball I’ve ever seen but they were some of the most fun games I’ve ever seen.

I’ve used this idea my whole life. Personally, I love to find things I enjoy to keep me busy and entertained.  In business, don’t judge people on how hard they work until you give them a full plate and something they enjoy.  That’s when you can see what they’re capable of.  It may not be working for you.  You may not be the person that provides them what they are looking for. That is not a reflection on either of you other than the partnership won’t reach its potential.  But if you do get it right, oh what a wonderful thing to watch and be a part of.

On a much broader scale, many of the problems we are seeing in schools are that it is becoming tough to teach a child that is thoroughly entertained every second of the day.  Getting their favorite things at their fingertips at a click. It’s easy to go from sitting around a backstretch doing nothing to fun sports.  t’s nearly impossible to go from that to math.   A teacher now has to be creative, entertaining, attentive, and provide the same dopamine their lives are already getting.  A task that many aren’t up to.  The question is not whether should they have to.  It is what it is.  Technology is not going away and taking it away isn’t the answer.

What is the answer?  Not sure but I have the basics.  Keep busy. Keep busy with positive things.  There are more things than ever to stay busy.  Make sure sports, social activities with interaction, reading, and other positive things are part of a day. And maybe Bingo everybody seems to love Bingo
