I wrote this on Twitter yesterday and I figured I would share it here as well
My father and I don’t get along all the time but he taught me the most important thing in life. What is wealth.
Wealth comes in all forms. Financial, information, security, youth, and love. He said if you have 2 of those you’re most likely going to have a good life. If you have 5 of those you can do anything in this world you want. Most never get all 5 at the same time. I sacrificed some areas for others. My youth part is diminishing.
Knowing this allows me to understand people and have easier conversations. Once you understand what wealth they value it’s easier to align conversations and activities. What you value doesn’t make you less of a person compared to anyone else. It merely means when I talk to someone obsessed about money we’re probably not going to talk about my favorite nonfiction book.
At the same time, talking about cheap first-class ticket to someone who has their Mom living with them and they have to take care of her, is not a good conversation. To them being able to care for their Mom is both a hardship but also wealth.
Understanding what is truly valuable to you will change with time. And it should. For those same reasons, I don’t judge someone’s version of wealth at any one point. But knowing them will lead to healthier conversations and relationships. From business to personal.
Most importantly you. Once you learn to navigate true wealth you will be able to reach the ultimate place. Driven for better, grateful for all you have achieved, and content if life stays in the present balance.
