One of the hardest career choices you can make is working with family. Working with any partner is difficult and family memeber as a partner is ever more difficult. My family has been in the nursery business for 5 generations but every generation has fought until the last man stands. That person continues on until the younger join in. I don’t want to do that but having multiple voices for the employees is not good business. It’s something I face all the time but shouldn’t. But the older generation never leaves. They just work less but want to be a part.
There are always the employees that pick sides and help one family member more than another and teams that get formed. Its always been my goal to break down those barriers and make it one company. Walls go up as everyone tries to carve out their own piece of the pie or prove themselves. It’s inevitable. As you know I don’t do it for the money but for the love of it. But there are trying times. I’ve made enough I don’t have to do it. It’s more responsibility and I enjoy the daily and the build. But damn it gets tough sometimes. I give talks to family businesses every once in a while about how to deal with it but there are times I have to sit back and figure out the answers myself. It always tends to be the same. I get hot and question the family member why important things weren’t up for discussion but then I see how hot I was and I’ve answered my own question. They knew I wouldn’t like their decision and forgiveness is easier than permission.
It always works out. Faster as I get older but fortunately I’m almost old enough to retire. I just need someone to take my place. Damn daughter. Environmental engineer. Took the easy way out
