When I first made the Drip’s Hot Honey I knew I had something good. Hot but didn’t ruin the flavor. What I didn’t anticipate was I couldn’t keep up with making it fast enough. I don’t want to expand too much and add employees or have to rent a commercial kitchen and its not big enough to have a copacker. It’s still under 6 figures in sales but even 50K in honey is a lot of honey. By the time I put in the work and make it I really don’t make much money but I’ve learned so much about packaging and marketing a product online. I haven’t even explored advertising or Amazon because I have no desire to scale losing money and that’s what I feel would happen if I give Amazon a cut or pay for clicks that don’t sell through.
I did have someone offer to buy the company and scale but I had to stay on for a year. I wanted to travel this year and not have a job but that may be something to consider down the road. Until then I’ll work on mass production without losing the quality. One issue is fresh peppers are much better flavor than dried but I can’t produce peppers year round. I can get about 9 months with grow lights. I do think I can get there with more testing or maybe I’ll have to make a couple hundred gallons of the hot honey in advance. A lot to think about and all good problems. Just need to solve them quickly as I have a lot of orders to fill 😂
