I’ve been wanting to build up my portfolio to about 1,000 names. Easy to say, but that means adding 400 domains to my portfolio. If I plan on avoiding “junk,” the average decent name costs around $580. Where did I come up with that number? It’s from talking to people with portfolios of 10,000+ domains. They were kind enough to share their numbers with me, and over the last year or so, the average ranged from $500 to $600. Of course, some were higher, some lower.
Let’s round it to $550 to keep it simple. At 400 names, that’s still a $220K investment to acquire those domains. That means I either need to come up with the cash or sell nearly $400K worth of names. Why $400K? Because after commissions and taxes, I’d end up with roughly $220K. I came close to that last year, so I’ve set aside that money to start making purchases.
The issue? I’m trending higher. I’ve purchased 40 domains this year, and my average buy price is $781 so far.
That puts my total at $312K. But there’s a kicker—I’ve added a few larger names privately, including an LLL.com, and my real average is actually $1,951. That would bring my total to $780K.
As you can see, this isn’t going to be a quick or cheap expansion. It’s a real business that requires real decisions every day—especially when the income was under $20K in the first month. That number was saved by a few late-month sales; otherwise, it would have been zero.
We’ll see how it all comes together and of course, the speed of the build comes down to the sales this year. Fingers crossed
