I always think of my smaller names as the coals and my large names as the big logs. The coals are what keep the fire going and the big logs keep the house warm and comfortable. My smaller names do two things. One, cash flow. They are more often, and keep money rolling in. They also give you a more constant source of happiness as you get emails saying “Congratulations, you sold XXXXXXX”.
The big names don’t sell as often, but when they do, they allow you to upgrade your portfolio much quicker and get the bills paid. Both are very important to my business model. I could do either and make a living but the combo has been a good route for me. I have a simple goal. More names that sell in that 4-9K range and more names that sell in that 300K to 1 million range. I know that sound like a “of course you would, anyone would” but many just stay on either side.
The stay in small because they don’t want to put all their eggs in one basket. The stay in large because they don’t want to spend the time to manage a lot of domains. A few sales a year but big ones with little to no time spent on management. Just hunting them down. I have gotten out of the closeout and sell for $3900, game. It’s a numbers game and makes for a giant portfolio to manage. It’s also the most competitive because it’s a price range everyone can afford. Fortunately for me when I did play in that area I acquired names that are now in the 5-10K range and I’ve stayed there. Also glad I stuck to my price. I had to wait for 7 years but instead of selling for $1500 I know get 6-10X that. Patience is your friend and patience makes the coals

Have a name at auction and need more exposure? Send me an email. We Charge $10 per name per day. We may be able to help. If you have an auction you want to promote, email us for details.* All names chosen by us. (ie you click through and purchase a name you like) or an occasional paid listing. Everything we say is based on our own research or is opinion. Do your own due diligence. That means look it up yourself if you don’t think the stats or our opinion is correct. We hand choose the names but we are paid to make this list by both the auction houses, individuals that are auctioning names, and Godaddy affiliate links. Keep that in mind and only buy names that YOU think are good.
