Shane’s List of Domains at Auction for Monday, July 6th, 2026

As I may have mentioned, there is a 4,000-acre wildfire burning out of control a few miles from the house I’m renting. Obviously, I’m not as concerned because it’s not my house. But I still don’t want anyone’s home to burn. I’ve kept up to date through various apps and Facebook groups for the area.

You’ve read enough of my posts to know that it drives me crazy when people come out of the woodwork and suddenly become the “I want to help everyone” people. I realize a time of crisis is a great time to be helpful. I am amazed at how many people have offered to bring their trailers and help relocate animals and livestock for those who need it. Farmers and animal lovers are truly some of the best people in the world. They would do it whether there was a fire or not. Farmers are just helpful people across the board.

But then there are those who spend every single day trying to figure out who to blame. They’re asking for geofence records of everyone in the area and the identities of all the through-hikers. There are two kinds of people: those who spend all their energy finding someone to blame, and those who put all their energy toward preventing it from happening again. I know which person I want standing beside me.

There are also the me, me, me people. People who don’t even live there and have two degrees of separation from anyone affected, yet they’re asking for vibes and prayers. I guess it depends on your beliefs, but I’ve realized that vibes and prayers aren’t nearly as effective as the 500 people out there working to put out the fire.

If you really want to help, send your concerns to your elected officials and let them know you support forest management. Donate with your pocketbook to the trail angels, volunteer fire departments, and the organizations that spend countless hours maintaining these incredible places. I’m always amazed at the prices people pay for homes with breathtaking views and beautiful natural surroundings, yet never stop to make sure their money and their politicians are doing everything they can to protect those views for the future.

For instance, the money raised from the National Parks needs to go to the National Parks. It went to fireworks at the Capital and DC improvements which I don’t agree with.

The takeaway should be a reminder that our forests are precious. Unfortunately, for many people, the takeaway becomes, “We hate tourists because they come here and devastate our land.” The reality is that there are few groups more respectful of nature than outdoor enthusiasts. Sure, there are bad apples and inexperienced campers who make mistakes or leave a mess. But for the most part, hikers, campers, hunters, anglers, and backpackers love these places because they’re beautiful, and they do more than almost anyone else to help protect them.
