Shane’s List of Domains at Auction for Monday, June 3rd, 2026

I bought a Netvue video bird feeder for my house. For one, I have hundreds of birds. My neighborhood used to be a cornfield, and it has taken decades to get some semblance of trees around the area, but I own a nursery. Because of that, I brought in giant trees with a tree spade, mature trees that were already 12 inches or more across. Twenty-three years later, I am the place where all the birds hang out. I also have a pond in my backyard, and the birds love the water.

So, I figured I could feed them while having an extra camera to watch my house. It catches birds on camera for me to look at, but it can also see when packages are delivered or when people pull into the driveway. The backyard feeder captures all of the backyard activities. It’s fun and provides safety.

Due to the amount of birds, one filling lasts only a day, so it can get pretty expensive to use high-quality bird food (i.e., non-millet food). Instead, I just get a wild bird mix in 50-pound bags, and all the different birds get a taste. We’ve had about 40 different types of birds come by over the years and, of course, the squirrels. I have those too. You can’t have the tallest, biggest tree for a half-mile and not have some form of squirrel.

I put in an English Oak. I didn’t choose it because it was the most pest-resistant, but because it actually plays host to more types of bugs than any other hardwood. That sounds like an issue, but when a tree is this big, the only bugs that are a real problem are borers, and they aren’t an issue here. The rest are foliar bugs, and the birds absolutely love them. If you have enough birds, the bugs never do any real damage. If they do, the leaves start fresh the next year. Because of my bird population, everything is in perfect harmony.

Still, people ask why I love it, and they are always surprised when I say it’s because it’s a fast-growing hardwood that is covered in bugs!
