Shane’s List of Domains at Auction for Monday, May 18th, 2026

One of the best investments I’ve ever made is buying a plane ticket to meet someone in person. If an interesting person asks me to dinner or wants to talk, I will fly all the way there to make it happen. The price of a plane ticket is small compared to the rewards of a great conversation and a genuine connection. It always pays off.

Some might say, “It must be nice to be able to afford that,” but the truth is that I can only afford to do it because of the money I’ve made from doing it. It’s a payoff, just a long-term one. You can’t think in terms of immediate payback. Most people feel the need to track every expense directly to a gain; they want tracking links because those are the only KPIs they understand. They assume that if it can’t be measured precisely, it isn’t a good investment.

A single conference expenditure involving one good meeting or one vital piece of information can pay for the entire trip. Perhaps that meeting introduces you to someone who introduces you to someone else. There is no metric more valuable than reach. The more you have, the more you stand to gain. Of course, you can’t set out to have conversations that only benefit you. Sometimes the gain is entirely for the other person. People don’t forget those who went out of their way to help them. In this selfish world, unselfish acts are rare.

Usually, a Google Meet is sufficient, but when judged properly, there are times when being in person provides 10x the value. It can be as simple as joining a group for dinner. I once drove two hours to go on a hike with a stranger. I didn’t know him at all, but a mutual friend mentioned they had a contact in Colorado looking for a hiking buddy. I was in. The result was a fantastic four-hour conversation and a new connection. We will probably never do business together, but you never know, and regardless, I had a great hike, so I lost nothing.

Another question often asked is: Is this a business expense? That is between you and your accountant. It depends on the situation and the nature of the discussions. I never push it; I’m not interested in getting audited or paying a fine because I flew to NYC to have lunch with someone from Goldman Sachs. But if a deal comes out of it, then I do.
