First, May the Forth be with you today.
The Kentucky Derby is a bit of a madhouse, but it’s a great event. Plenty of gambling, drinking, and everyone dressed up, exactly my kind of scene. Having worked at dog and horse tracks from high school through college, doing everything from the backstretch to taking bets, I’ve always enjoyed being around the track.
A few people pinged me for picks this weekend since I’ve been doing this for decades. I haven’t read a racing sheet in years, but I took a look at the Derby field. While it’s gambling and anything can happen, a few fundamentals never change, horses get tired, and some are just flat-out faster than others.
Most people bet on “improvement,” but the reality is that improvement usually comes from better racing conditions. Bettors stare at speed ratings but ignore the fact that a horse kept getting pushed wide into the bad parts of the track. If you find a jockey who can keep a horse tight and save ground, it makes a massive difference.
Strategy only works if the rest of the field plays into it. In this Derby, we had a few notable closers. For a closer to win, you need a high-speed pace up front to tire out the leaders. Horses don’t actually “speed up” to come from behind; the leaders slow down and get passed. This race had good speed and several jockeys trying to go wire-to-wire. The horses that finished first and second had rough gates, and many people discounted them because they figured they’d get knocked back at the first turn. In reality, it didn’t matter, as long as they got to the rail to rest, they just had to swing out wide at the end to find their lane.
I didn’t catch the winner, but I caught the second-place horse and made some good money wheeling it with longshots. The tickets paid out well, I was actually surprised to see the place price hit $7.16.
Most people probably don’t care about horse racing, but I enjoy it because you can actually gain an edge over the common “drunk gambler.” It’s still a losing game in the long run, but if you do it correctly, it’s a fun, slow burn.
Quote of the Day: “There have always been, and there always will be, the same percentage of winners and losers in this world. There may be more of us today than there’s ever been. But the percentages, they stay exactly the same.” -Jerremy Irons in Margin Call
