Everyone has a different way of feeling better. There are a million people who will tell you how to get there—do this, do that. One of the most common pieces of advice is to get better sleep. It’s one of the few things that is 100% correct and undeniable. The issue, however, is how to actually achieve it. You’ll hear advice like: don’t eat three hours before bed, avoid screens, take magnesium, or try breathing techniques. These all work for many people.
I finally figured out my own routine, and I want to share it with you. It won’t work for everyone, but it took my deep and REM sleep from one hour to four hours over the past few years.
First, find your ideal mattress. It makes all the difference in the world. Go to the store and lie on a bunch of them. You’ll know the right one the second you’re on it.
Second, keep it cool. Hot bedrooms lead to bad sleep for me. A temperature between 60 and 67 degrees is perfect, ideally warming up just a little right around wake time.
Third, track your sleep to see which changes actually help. I tried everything and found I could only comfortably sleep with a Whoop or an Oura Ring. I ultimately went with Whoop because I didn’t like wearing the Oura ring all day, whereas keeping the Whoop on all day is effortless. The Apple Watch is ridiculous—it can’t even hold a charge to last through the night. It’s a worthless watch, IMO.
Fourth, Taurine. You never hear anyone talk about it, but it lowers my resting heart rate, which lets me sleep better and calms my body down.
Fifth, get longer sleep. I know, I know—it’s a cliché. But your REM sleep comes at the tail end of the night, and if you don’t get enough total sleep, you miss out on it. REM is the ultimate brain repairer. For 30 years, I didn’t even get an hour of REM because I never slept more than seven hours. Yeah, yeah, I hear people say they can function well on five hours. You’re doing fine, sure, but you just don’t know how great you could be with 7.5 or 8 hours.
Finally, the Marpac Dohm sound machine. This was a total game-changer. Turning this on at night puts me to sleep instantly; I’ve trained my body to fall asleep the moment I hear that sound. My sleep latency—the time it takes to fall asleep—is never more than five minutes now. In fact, I actually can’t sleep in dead silence anymore. The truth is, there’s no such thing as dead silence; without white noise, my brain just picks up on every random sound. This machine turns all of that background noise into nothing.
I know this is a domain blog, and more than half the time I don’t even talk about domains. But the healthier you are and the better you feel, the better your decisions will be. A happy you is a profitable you.
