Listening to the latest My First Million podcast with Lloyd Blankfein, the former Chairman of Goldman Sachs, really hit home personally with a lot of the things he said. As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve been fortunate enough to have dinner with a previous Chairman of GS who gave me a one-hour super-talk on asymmetric information. Lloyd touched on the importance of a great spouse in helping him get to where he is today.
Sam mentioned he doesn’t even know how or what any of his personal bills are. Lloyd said, “My job was to bring in the money, and my wife was in charge of disbursement.” My household is exactly the same. My wife makes a great living, but she handles all of our personal finances. Lloyd mentioned he hasn’t paid a bill in 40 years; I am the same. In my business, I used to write and sign hundreds of checks or payments a week. In my personal life, I’ve written maybe three checks in my entire life, and I’ve paid zero bills. I have absolutely no idea what our insurance, electric, or any other bills actually cost. I just know my wife is a great money manager, and what we have is a direct result of that.
My job is to make money. Her job is to make sure we have enough to retire and live a nice life. My job is to add to that and make our road easier and better. We also lived in a modest house, kept our cars for 10 years, and maintained a Midwest lifestyle, so meeting our day-to-day needs wasn’t too difficult.
Lloyd also mentioned he was a very risky investor, which I appreciate. In business, you have to be. They are calculated, informed risks, but compared to the “normal” person, they would be considered much too risky. Most people can’t afford to start and own a business because you don’t get a regular paycheck. Employees always get paid first, and all extra money goes right back into growing the company.
In my side investing, I am always investing in new tech that could either 50x or amount to absolutely nothing. Take domains, for example. It has always been an alternative investment, but when I started, it was an alternative alternative investment. Crypto, NFTs, AI infrastructure, domains, memorabilia—they are all risky, but I was early, and they paid off handsomely. My main business is very large, but it’s an illiquid asset, which makes it very difficult to diversify. Everything is tied to one basket. Had I only done that, I would be in a completely different tax bracket. It would still be a comfortable one, but it would mean a different lifestyle and not nearly as enjoyable as the one I have now.
The MFM podcast really hit home because all these guys are just like me: big thinkers with spouses who keep the home base secure, the kind of security that I am not naturally great at building. With a good partnership, you get to enjoy both. That security and worry-free environment at home is exactly what allows you to take the big swings.
