Elliot Silver just announced the recent sale of 3D.com for $500K and I don’t think I am the first to say….only $500K? Five hundred thousand dollars is a lot of money and it’s a fantastic sale for Sedo but I would have bet hard earned money it would sell for double the price. Sedo’s job is to sell names and the seller was obviously willing to sell the name at this price so everybody is happy. Perhaps I shouldn’t be surprised considering the less than steller past sales in the 3D category.
Maybe the owner needed some money and could see all the negative press 3D has been getting lately and figured he needed to sell now or he/she would have to wait for the next wave of 3D love. Whatever the scenario I still considered one of the best two character dot coms on the planet and as one commentor on Elliots Blog put it, for it to sell for $50,000 more than meet.me say something. It says that Schwartz did a hell of a job with meet.me or 3D was sold at a discount.
If the buyer was an enduser then the got a great deal. If it is a flipper then I have to believe that they are sitting at a pretty good price to make a little money. Either way, Hollywood is going to eventually end up with this domain and if they just did then that’s the last time you’ll see this domain on the market for a while.
Apples and oranges. There weren’t any other buyer for Meet.me, it was one buyer, or no buyer. 3D.com on the other hand there likely were multiple parties at that price level. One was sold at as super-premium, the other as a commodity.
I wonder what this says for the domain market, as a whole. The YTD chart shows a clear reduction in the number of big sales this year compared to the last 3-4 years. Whether it is a temporary slow down or an indication of a long-term fall in domain prices will be interesting to follow over the next few years.
Think of it this way. NL com domain sold for $500,000. Great deal for the seller.

Let me put it this way: I can see MHB selling 3D.TV for $500K. I’m not sure if he owns that but just using it as an example.
3D.com should’ve sold for at least $2-5 million USD. Ridiculous.

Shane, this is a balanced report on the sale. The scenarios you pointed to takes the edge off total condemnation of the sale. Frankly, I like sellers that don’t try to get all the meat off the bone. Let someone else live a little.
If the 3d.com sold for $500k, curious what the market or industry groups would put the price for 3d.org. If you owned 3d.org what would the market pay? Curious to get opinions.
You are definitely not the only one saying – why so low?? Hell, when I saw it listed earlier this year I said “Why now?” It must have been a very motivated seller…
