The 4th of July used to be my favorite holiday. You won’t believe this but when I was a kid our parents just let us roam the neighborhood and we just had to be home by a certain time. Not really any boundaries except behave and be careful. And there weren’t cellphones so if things did go wrong you had better figure it out. Of course that also meant we did way too many things we shouldn’t.
One fourth of July I had this great idea. I was going to take a box of thread and make the worlds largest spiderweb. I built it between two trees and made it just like a spider would. Same pattern and everything. I sprayed it with glue in a can so that bugs would stick to it. It looked just like a spider web except it was 10 feet high and wide. Being a kid I knew I had to light something on fire. So I waited until dark, dipped the left over spools of thread in gasoline. I tied a few lines of the thread from mailbox to mail box and hung one of the threads of spool on the thread in the middle and lit it on fire. It looked like a fireball suspended in mid air in the middle of the road. I then lit the other spool about 5 feet behind the spider web I built and the backdrop made it look amazing.
Every person that pulled up stopped and said WTF is that. And turned around. They both burned for about 15 minutes and me and my friends thought we were the funniest, most clever kids in the world. What we didn’t think of was the car full of teenagers that sped up and drove through the liquid fiery melting plastic. Spreading burning fire all over their window that didn’t go out but kept burning. Fortunately most of it went over the window and landing in the road but there were a few pieces that they knocked off with something. It could have turned out really really bad. But a 10 year old doesn’t play out the full card before they do something. And I didn’t see that coming. Literally didn’t see it because I ran home as fast as I could as soon as they hit it and saw the results.
To this day its one of my most memorable 4th of Julys and its been a bit tough to top for sheer excitement. I hope your Fourth is just as exciting.
And yes Travis and I own July.org.
