So Andrew Alleman of DNWire.com noted that my assumption of 3% sales of a portfolio is high. That 1% to 2% is normal. Using his discussions with domain investors that share their data. He certainly talks to more people than me and is way more formal in his approach to taking in information. So the new number is 1 to 2%. I’d love to hear from readers what their sale through percentage is. The positive is my sell through rate is normal now
After watching the market collapse yet again yesterday I am less likely than I was the day before to spend my cash. The dollar is so strong right now and is more valuable than it’s been in a long long time. I’m more interested in taking in cash than spending it. I imagine this is the case for a lot of people and businesses right now.
On a completely different note I stocked our new pond at the nursery. I got the recommended amount and mix of fish based on the USDA during their fish sale. I have to admit it was pretty fun releasing all the fish. It was like starting a new fish tank times 1000. Also going to be some incredible fishing in a few years since nobody is fishing but us.
On another side note. My daughter Libby is one of the smarter people I know. But she said at Princeton the PhD students are next level and she’s met her match. One thing I found interesting is that most of the best and the brightest are not from the US. That most of the students are foreign. China being heavily represented. Meaning that we in the US are educating the world. While there are many incredible institutes of higher learning, MIT and Princeton are definitely considered by the world one of the top engineering and mathematics school. She is amazed how smart everyone is. Most lacking social skills but in their area of expertise she’s seen none better at her age. To her its intimidating. As a parent I think its going to challenge her and take her to an incredible level of learning. Which is a good thing.

Have a name at auction and need more exposure? Send me an email. We Charge $10 per name per day. We may be able to help. If you have an auction you want to promote, email us for details.*All names chosen by us, Shane and Josh . (ie you click through and purchase a name you like) or an occasional paid listing. Everything we say is based on our own research or is opinion. Do your own due diligence. That means look it up yourself if you don’t think the stats or our opinion is correct. We hand choose the names but we are paid to make this list by both the auction houses, individuals that are auctioning names, and Godaddy affiliate links. Keep that in mind and only buy names that YOU think are good.
I would say 1% – 2% is a normal sell-through rate for domains priced at a standard end user price range.
That number though can vary wildly based on a number of factors like domain quality, asking price, if the domain is priced, if it is listed on popular venues, your negotiation ability, and others.
Brad
1-2% has been what’s reported from the large holders for a pretty long time. A couple of the bigger folio holders you know well could probably have some good insight for you. I think if you hold under 1000 names and work hard ( aggressive efforts in pricing and outbound), you could definitely far exceed those numbers.
