I was one of the last people I know to have all their grandparents. I had 3 of them while still in my 50s. I knew it wouldn’t last long as they all were in their mid 90s. 3 years later I have lost all my grandparents. I lost my Grandmother this week. This is not to get condolences, quite the opposite. I got to experience 50 years of 3 of my grandparents. I got to experience 18 years with my great-grandmother and quite a few with my great great grandmother. I have been very fortunate to have gotten a chance to know all of them and am celebrating their long lives. Many people never get to know their grandparents and some even their parents go too early. 75% of my friends don’t have both parents. I was close to not having a Dad a few years back. We don’t speak right now because he is mad at me for leaving the nursery but all his good and bad have given me great lessons that have made me better person.
My Grandmother has not remembered who I am for the last several years, so I lost her a few years ago. It still is hard for the children of the family and those that loved her. It is now here where I become the patriarch of the family. Responsible for being helpful and taking care of others in the family. I welcome that role. With any luck you too will have that role. It’s an honor that is given to those that the family deems capable. And someday you hope someone will do the same for you
