Every week another AI company raises hundreds of millions of dollars and people still act like domains somehow won’t benefit from it. Money flows downhill. Always has. You can build the greatest model in the world, hire the smartest engineers on the planet, and spend billions on GPUs, but eventually every company has to face the public. They need a brand. They need trust. They need identity. And in the digital world, that still starts with the domain name.
The funny part is we’ve seen this movie before. The internet boom created category defining domain sales. Crypto created another wave. Now AI is doing it at a scale we’ve never seen. The difference this time is the money is real and the companies are real businesses from day one. OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity, all of them have trained the market to understand that a simple memorable name matters. Once companies raise at billion dollar valuations, paying six or seven figures for the exact match domain stops looking expensive and starts looking obvious.
And it won’t just be the top one percent of names. The money always spreads outward. One word .coms go first. Then strong two word brands. .ai went from being a tech name to THE most wanted TLD. Reaching IMO 50% of a dot com price. Then the supporting ecosystem names around infrastructure, agents, security, robotics, compute, healthcare, finance, and whatever category gets funded next week. Domains are digital land and AI companies are building entire cities right now.

Have a name at auction and need more exposure? Send me an email. We Charge $10 per name per day. We may be able to help. If you have an auction you want to promote, email us for details.* All names chosen by us. (ie you click through and purchase a name you like) or an occasional paid listing. Everything we say is based on our own research or is opinion. Do your own due diligence. That means look it up yourself if you don’t think the stats or our opinion is correct. We hand choose the names but we are paid to make this list by both the auction houses, individuals that are auctioning names, and Godaddy affiliate links. Keep that in mind and only buy names that YOU think are good.

I wonder how it will pan out regarding AI companies’ use of extensions.
Perplexity uses the ai. and has the .com forwarded. OpenAI uses the .com, but the .ai is owned by a Chinese individual. Anthropic uses the .com and owns the .ai, but doesn’t forward it…
It will be interesting to see how many will stick to the .ai and how many will upgrade to the .com. If you can even call it an upgrade anymore.
I think they should secure it for brand protection but at this point they should just run on the .ai
Great analysis here, Shane.
While dot-COM will always remain the king of the domain empire, everyone is going to look back and see how massively undervalued dot-AI names are at this moment.
I don’t think they are massively undervalued. Premium ai are going for 40-50% of dot com in some cases. Dot ai is hitting its strides. IMO not undervalued or catching up. Its prime time. Lower quality keywords don’t do well regardless of TLD
