Since I’ve been retired I’ve really started to get into photography. Like everything I do I jump in pretty hard and spend too much on equipment. In hind site I realize I get the best equipment because it forces me to spend time doing it. When I decided to do my first triathlon I didn’t do a Sprint distance or even an Olympic I did an Ironman. I bought a $6,000 bike and spent 17 hrs a week for 2 years getting ready for it. Every time I saw that bike in the garage I knew I needed to get to work.
I ended up buying the Sony A7 V after a lot of reading and questioning other content creators and photographers. It has incredible video and its a great photo camera as well. I’ve learned that like triathlons and every other skill it takes practice. You can point and shoot but if you want to get the most out of it you have to take classes. So that’s what I am doing. I still feel subject matter, angles and the story of the picture are the most important but if you can’t capture it in the best way possible you lose all of the above.
I’ve learned about the lenses and their uses. The importance of management of light and exposure. I’ve learned where to keep my camera and how to keep it ready if I’m driving and I see something that is a passing moment. I have a long way to go and many years of practice but truly looking forward to capturing some beautiful things in the second half of my life.
