The safest option is always to stay home. Unfortunately, some of the best views and best adventures you’ll ever have involve suffering. Think about the stories you tell your friends at a party. Usually, it’s the bad or unusual events that occurred. When I tell the story of climbing a tough mountain they really only want two things. The pictures from the top or the climbing, and the stories of some of the hard things we faced. It’s not as fun sharing a story of an easy hike, that’s just an average day. People enjoy not average days or events. For most of us, “not average” involves going into the land of uncomfortable, whether we choose it or not.
As a person that tells stories (too often my daughter says) I don’t generally get angry at the events that would ruin another person’s day. One, if I’m not hurt then it wasn’t too bad. Two, if its solved through money then it’s not as bad as it could be. Three, it’s going to be a good story to tell which makes it less painful that it would otherwise. Getting two flat tires while driving down the road is pretty rough. I’ve driven for 30 years and everyone I know the same, and none have gotten two flat tires at the same time. Yet I hit a board with nails that got both tires. My daughter says “Can’t we change them with the spare?” I explain to her cars generally come with only one and if I was driving a Tesla it comes with zero. That’s how often people get flat tires. Enough that Tesla doesn’t think mathematically it’s worth the weight of a flat tire. But here I am again, talking about getting two flat tires and I’ve told it many times. How my daughter got upset, how the tire repair person told me he was wondering the entire way over how I got two flat tires. Life is easier when it’s broken down into chapters and stories. Some good, some bad, and as long as the main character doesn’t die, there’s always a chance for a happy ending. Live it like you’re trying to write a best seller.
