Shane’s Daily List of Domains at Auction for Monday, November 6th, 2023

I’ve traveled all over the world, but I have to say, traveling to Asia is a completely different experience. Here are a few takeaways from my recent trip.

  1. This was the first trip where I felt lonely at certain times. I went all the way across the world with nobody to share it with. It’s like hitting a hole in one with nobody to see it. Everything about it was incredible, but when something is incredible, it’s much more fun when shared with others.
  2. My most enjoyable moments were with a friend I had met during a business meeting. He lived in China but across the bay from Hong Kong. So I invited him to the Bored Ape party, and we spent the next day hiking and eating. We decided the best way to meet would be to hike and talk. He also speaks four languages fluently, including Chinese, so he took me to lunch and showed me a traditional Chinese lunch at a small local place where I would have been nervous to go in, but the food was fantastic.
  3. It was almost impossible to work. Between the 13-hour time difference, the planned events, and lack of sleep, every time I worked, it was sloppy or rushed. I’ve just started working again and eventually decided it’s better to enjoy Hong Kong and hit it hard when I come back.
  4. The US is far behind when it comes to facilities and tech in travel. Tokyo and Hong Kong airports were spotless, efficient, and organized. Even though I had to go through immigration, it was still five times faster to move through security. Scanning of passports, camera recognition, and I was through. Bags on the conveyor, no need to take shoes off, often no need to take anything out of the bag. The US was really easy, but only because ANA airlines had a special business class security area that had almost nobody running through it.
  5. I have never seen so many people living in such a small area. Building after building, 50 stories tall, as far as the eye could see. Millions and millions of people on a few small islands.
  6. They put up buildings in months. Hundreds of cranes working seven days a week. Things that would take five years to finish in the US take a year.
  7. Don’t believe the “everyone speaks English” thing. If they do, half the people I met in the restaurants didn’t. Half the Uber drivers didn’t. You can easily do everything you need to do, but there were quite a few times I just ate what they brought.
  8. There are a lot of foreigners in Hong Kong, as expected, but I met more Australians than English, more Europeans than Americans. The foreigners all hang together and eat at the same restaurants. The French met at this nice wine bar. The Australians had a spot, etc. Obviously, there was mixing of cultures, but there was definitely some “hang with your fellow countrymen” thing going on.
  9. The women go under the bridges to meet because there is no room in their homes and no public meeting spaces. The women gather in the most open, dry area of the city—under the bridges. In the US, it’s where the homeless gather and live. In Hong Kong, the women gather and seem to be having a great time. I saw them singing and playing music, having food, just socializing as friends. My friend, whom I talked about above, took me around the city and showed me all the culture and things that make Hong Kong unique. This was one of them.
  10. I do not take for granted the good fortune I have to be able to travel to all the great places I’ve been. Growing up, we went to Acapulco and my grandparents’ house. That was the extent of my travel. Sure, we went camping a few times and to various places, but all were because of my father’s work. Never a trip that was of any distance that didn’t involve family-owned housing or work. I took business class, and it’s expensive, maybe more than I should be spending, but it was incredible, memorable, and let me enjoy two days that normally would have been used for jet lag. I was able to sleep or get some things done, like write this. My dad will say we couldn’t afford to do the things I do now. I agree to some extent. Three kids do make things a lot more expensive. But some of it was that the previous generation didn’t tend to travel as much. The world wasn’t as open as it is now. We also didn’t have as many two-income families, which does increase the family’s income.
  11. Every time I travel to a new foreign country, I look at the world a little differently when I come home. Some of it’s appreciation for what I have. Some of it is understanding more about the world and people. It’s always feeling grateful I got to go and yearning to go somewhere else.
  12. I never went shopping, got a massage, or did any of the things I can do at home. It was my first time, so I just walked. Walked around and took it in. Sometimes I hiked and took it in from the top of the city, other times I took a back alley and saw it from within. I didn’t sleep very much because I only had five days. I hated to waste it in bed. I was on vacation, but I wasn’t there to relax. I sit around enough at home and work. I wanted to see Hong Kong. And I sure did. I only hope to bring my wife or daughter so I can share it with them.

Quote of the Day: “Hong Kong is a wonderful, mixed-up town where you’ve got great food and adventure. First and foremost, it’s a great place to experience China in a relatively accessible way.” – Anthony Bourdain

  1. Really enjoyed today’s blog. Sounds like it was a great time! Love traveling… especially business class. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Good observations Shane. The “women” gathering under the bridge you are referring to are domestic helpers. They aren’t local but mostly from Indonesia and the Philippines. They gather under bridges, in malls, in public parks, etc, but only on Sunday which is their day off.
