I was recording a pretty big podcast that’s dropping soon, and one of the questions they asked me was how to get your kids interested in joining the family business or getting into your line of work. Here’s what I said:
Be a good dad and love their mom. Show them that even with the long hours you put in, you can still be present and involved. Be there when they need you. Be available. Let them see that you’re a good husband and that it’s possible to work hard, succeed, and still show up as the kind of father and partner they admire. That’s something they’ll consider being part of—or might even hope for.
But if you’re never home, miss their games, or have a bad relationship with their mom, they’ll connect that with your job or business. And there’s no way they’ll want that life. It won’t matter if you hand it to them on a silver platter—if they think it leads to a broken home, they’ll walk away. So do both well. Show them that your work contributes to a happy, strong family. That’s what really matters. That’s what will stick.
