Happy 4th of July to all you US readers. The 4th of July has always been one of my favorite holidays. It was the one time of year we always took a vacation as a family. No matter where we lived in the US, and it was a lot of places, we would always drive to Illinois to see my grandparents. They had a pool and what seemed like a big yard to play in. We also had big nursery buildings, and I would go explore everywhere. The nursery had been around since 1865, but the main buildings had burned down several times. Long stories behind that. There were always cool root cellars and storage buildings full of old equipment, trucks, and cars.
The park is where all the good stuff happened. I had lived there until I was 5, so I knew the park well. In today’s terms, it would be called a death trap with a 100% guarantee of injury. Metal slides so hot that going down in the afternoon could cause third-degree burns. We had a large 8-foot barrel on a track that had both sides open. If you ran up the sides, the barrel would roll. You get four kids running up the sides and you could get it moving fast. Think of a wooden hamster wheel. You remember what happens when one of the hamsters stops but the wheel keeps going? That’s exactly what happened to us. I was a veteran, so I knew if I couldn’t run anymore, I’d dive out of the barrel into the grass. The newbies there for the 4th had no idea. They’d stop, get carried to the top, and fall back hard onto the floor—only to repeat that process for a few turns. Like a washer full of human clothes. I witnessed at least five or six broken arms and countless cut chins and broken teeth. They removed the thing in the 90s, and I couldn’t believe it made it that long. Of course the day would end with fireworks and it was the big event for the town. I think 50% of the town’s budget went to the fireworks show.
My hometown was 60% Hispanic because the town was built around the nurseries and that was the workforce. So the park was also full of food stands with the best food you’ve ever had. Mexican restaurants are a staple now, but I grew up with that food my entire life. In junior high and high school, I also thought the young women were the most beautiful of any city. Mexican-American young women who spoke both languages and came from working families. They carried themselves with such confidence and knew what hard work looked like. I may have been a catch since most knew me as a member of the family that owned one of the nurseries. Or maybe I was just an out of towner and different.
Pretty sure my mom hated using up a vacation to drive to the same small town every year, but in hindsight, for me it was great to see and get to know my family, even if it was only once a year. You’ve heard me say it here many times, they were a cast of characters. And those cast of characters came out with the 4th of July and a little drinking. Stories that would last a lifetime. And that’s what life is about. Creating memories and stories. And the 4th of July has always delivered.

If you have an auction you want to promote, email us for details.* All names chosen by us. (ie you click through and purchase a name you like) or an occasional paid listing. Everything we say is based on our own research or is opinion. Do your own due diligence. That means look it up yourself if you don’t think the stats or our opinion is correct. We hand choose the names but we are paid to make this list by both the auction houses, individuals that are auctioning names, and Godaddy affiliate links.
