I always thought we would eventually move to a cafeteria plan for programming, where you could just choose stations and put together a package. We kind of got that with basic YouTube TV and then added HBO, Apple, and other things. But then everyone started their own streaming service, and those all started either getting bought out or merged. The YouTube TV model with all the other add-ons is almost over. ABC, CBS, and NBC have each merged into their own packages. ABC is now the Disney package with ABC, Disney, ESPN, and the NFL. NBC is Peacock and USA Network, which owns all kinds of things. CBS is Paramount.
If you buy each of their packages, you essentially have everything you need and don’t have to stack them on top of YouTube. Add in that Hulu was a partnership of all of them, but ABC bought them out, and it will be merging into the Disney/ABC package. In short, it’s going to be six packages from here on out: ABC, CBS, NBC, Amazon Prime, and Netflix. Those are your choices. Whatever you want is in those six.
Is it good? That all depends on the total cost, and that changes every day. My guess is it will be $150 a month for full TV. We all switched from DirecTV when it got to $120 because it was too expensive, and got YouTube or Hulu for $50. Then that price kept going up. Add in all the other stuff we have, and it’s at $120–130. I think when it settles, $150 a month will be the new norm.
Now we add our monthly for AI, and other packages we add online and I am merely guessing but I would say the higher income families are going to be spending $500 a month on cellular, internet, streaming, and only monthlies. No data and no research, just off the top of my head. So then I looked. They say the average family spends $272 a month on everything not including the online subscriptions. So maybe I am a bit high.
Internet: ~$69.43
Mobile phone plan: ~$60.69
Streaming services: ~$42.38
Cable TV services: ~$88.94
These numbers seem right. So I will say $350 with my revised info. How much do you spend?
