Domain Spotlight:

Shane’s List of Domains at Auction for Saturday, October 25th, 2025

Let’s talk about domain appraisals. In my opinion, they are good for only one thing: sorting domains. A decent appraisal will at least give me the ability to look through a list and have the top domains be the better-quality names. Is it going to get some wrong? Yes. If it gets too many wrong, it’s no good. I don’t care what you say about GoDaddy’s appraisal, it sorts well. Sure, a million-dollar domain will say $25K, but it’s still at the top of the list because it’s consistent.

I would never use an appraisal to price a name. Atom is as close as I get when they give a price suggestion. The names I don’t have on Atom are because their suggestion is too low. I also bring down the price often because it also can be too high. Yes, I want a moonshot, but I also don’t want to scare someone. I pick up some good buys, but a $40 buy priced at $55K is a bit high. I have some room to bring it back in hopes of selling it quicker.

If a buyer says, “so and so appraised it at this,” I’ll bring up Estibot and show them the $268K estimate. I’m sure I can find some appraisal that is more than what they showed me. Or I just say, I’ve been doing this 20 years. My sales and my prices are what they built that appraisal on. They merely haven’t adjusted this one yet.

I also don’t get concerned about how my domains appraise. People buy my domains because they are interested in the word. The appraisal may sway their offer, but it doesn’t sway their desire. It’s up to me to take that perceived value and negotiate to a good price for both.

Quote of the Day: “Every domain appraisal is built on yesterday’s sales. The real market is always one step ahead.” — Shane Cultra
