When I was growing up, the goal in life was to work hard, save money, and have enough to live the life you always wanted. Rich was good. Wealth was a goal.
That seems to have changed. Now people want freedom and quality of life. I think that is a great goal, and it is not that different from what we talked about above. The difference seems to be that being too “rich” is now seen as a bad thing. Flaunting it is even worse. The ultra-wealthy are instantly labeled as bad and as stealing from those who have less.
This idea has existed for thousands of years. Many nations have collapsed through revolutions based on this belief. The difference is that, in those cases, the governments and the people running them actually were stealing from everyone. In my opinion, that is a completely different scenario from what is happening now.

This happened to a friend the other night. He earned his money in housing. He builds high-rise apartments and has helped change the skyline around town. His rent is fair and geared toward students. He and his family are some of the nicest people I know and also among the most charitable in town.
The problem is his house is huge. As a builder, he is able to build a magnificent home at a fraction of the cost of hiring someone else to do it. The result is that it is noticed as one of the nicer homes in town. It has now become a target, and the situation has turned dangerous for him and his young family.
I absolutely hate to see it, and I fear more of this is coming. I do not fear for our country, because I think this is a moment in time, but I do not like where we are heading. Predetermined hate for things. Hate for immigrants. Hate of the wealthy. Hate of anyone with a septum ring. Hate for an opposing political view.
My dad’s best friend had an absolutely opposite view of politics from him. They could not have been more different, a far-right man and a far-left man. Yet they were best friends and genuinely enjoyed talking things out over drinks. That is what I grew up with. Both men listened to the other’s viewpoints and took them in. Intelligent conversation and a great deal of respect.
That was normal to me growing up. It seems to be lost. It is still there in my world, but I think that makes me rare.
I am a Republican, and I do put some of the blame on Trump for much of this. He has set the tone for what is considered OK. Culture and tone are set by the people who are most seen and heard, and he represents that. Of course, everyone is responsible for their own words and actions, but cruel and exaggerated rhetoric now seems to be acceptable.
And no “but so and so did this” I don’t play that game. Each person has a responsibility to lead others through their actions. To be better. We’re not doing a great job at it lately
