Domain Spotlight:

Shane’s List of Domains at Auction for Friday, March 27th, 2026

There was an interesting article from the President of Encirca yesterday discussing the repositioning of legacy TLDs. Meaning country code or other existing TLDs to be more AI and new tech oriented. They discussed .ai, .vc, .gg, and .so changing from representing a country to something completely different. And they laid out what they thought could or is happening to other legacy TLDs. Their examples

.net and .network speak directly to Prompt Network, Photonic Network, and Peer Network

.systems speaks to AI infrastructure, distributed ledger systems, and quantum systems

.technology is broad but available and meaningful. .tools maps onto developer tooling, AI tooling, and the broader builder ecosystem

.build is perhaps the most generically founder-facing string in the existing root zone—available, short, and immediately intelligible to any startup

.run maps onto inference, execution, and agent runtime concepts in AI infrastructure

While still a risky registration, there is some merit to this and an opportunity for domain investors. No doubt we get tired of domain investors telling us what the new meaning of a TLD is or will be. Like they are trying to manifest something or in the spirit of Mean Girls, “make Fetch happen”. But it could happen.

All it needs is one unicorn to use the TLD in a defining way. Like Notion did with .so. Many people think .net is undervalued because of this reason. No doubt new tech is not as caught up on dot com as most old school domain investors. While dot com is and always will be king, the pathway to the king is often through another TLD. As we know there can only be one dot com owner but there are multiple people who work off the same keyword so they have to go another route. That other route may be the above. Now you just have to decide which one. Because we know the value of a domain is the ability to replace it and non coms can be replaced in many different ways.
