If you’ve learned anything from me over the last 20 years, it’s that I live for consistency and routine. To me, they are the backbone of creativity, not because that is where creativity lies (the opposite, actually), but because routine is important when you have a busy life with a lot to do. There is only so much bandwidth our minds can give to drive, creative thinking, and enthusiasm.
Commitment to something is made far in advance; you don’t make that decision on a daily basis. If you had to decide every single day whether you were going to do something, at some point, you would fail. You decide way in advance what you are going to do, and you stick with it. As a runner, I have decided I am going to run. However many days a week it is, I am going to run. When I wake up most days, I do not feel like running. A mind at wakeup is not a driven mind; it is a protectionist mind telling you that you need more sleep and more rest. That is the job of the mind. When I wake up, I am not deciding whether or not I run. That has already been set. My only decisions are how far, where to run, and how fast. This is what commitment looks like: you are determining the details, not the path.
To me, this is the only way to reach big goals. Decide what they are and commit, no questions asked. Now that I have my commitments set and the biggest decisions removed, my day consists of two things: routines that are either a must-do or have been done so many times that I don’t have to think, followed by the exploratory and creative hours for the rest of the day. This is the part of the day where I learn and map out new goals or pathways to goals. No roads, no plans. A day of complete freedom is a day of endless wandering. People make it their life’s goal to have complete freedom, but I find that I personally have to have some goals or structure, or I wander.
I have committed to many things, only to find after 6 months or a year that it becomes a commitment I can’t keep. Perhaps it isn’t going like I thought it would. The end goal is set further out. Maybe it’s not as rewarding as expected, or often, much harder than I realized. I feel like I’ve abandoned so many things, despite being consistent for decades on others. But after 25 years of trying new things, I think that’s just what success looks like: a ton of “failures” with a few big wins.
One thing I have benefited from is a lack of anxiety. To me, anxiety is failing BEFORE I have even attempted the feat. Anxiety is the only way to fail twice. Because I’m older and have failed at so many things, I accept that anything I do may not work out, and I am fine with that. I realize if I fail, I’m not going to die. I’m not in the middle of the ocean trying to make it to land, I won’t die, and it won’t kill my financial future. It may actually build it if it works out. I realize many people have clinical mental conditions that cause anxiety that can’t be helped. And obviously, I have anxiety at times; I’m human. But age has taught me that my anxiety can often be pinpointed to a specific situation or person, and if it persists despite my efforts to solve it, it has to go. Things have to change. After a certain point, making a change isn’t running away; it’s a necessary life transition. Knowing that I handle things well, if I can’t resolve the feeling, I need to dive straight into the source.
I say all this because it’s the only way I know: show my process so people can take what they want from it. Telling someone “not to worry” is worthless and wrong. What you actually do is go back after the fact, discuss what was expected to go wrong, and evaluate what actually happened versus what didn’t. Each time, you add to your experience and let your brain learn the real implications of your actions. As I stated in the beginning, your mind is there to protect you. Every day you show it that you will be okay after taking action, it becomes less likely to fight you.
