GrabAMop.com: A Domain and Catchphrase That Didn’t Quite Catch On

If there is anything that is a given in this world lately, its that President Obama will be on the news and in the minds of the media.  To fuel the flames, the Democratic National Committee is always looking for slogans and catchphrases to rally the troops.  Yes We Can, Let Me Be Clear, and many others are repeated over and over.  Recently the DNC jumped on another one and tried to use the web to make another one rise to popularity, “Grab a Mop” .  Here is the part of the speech they deemed worthy of this campaign.

“What I reject is when some folks say we should go back to the past policies when it was those very same policies that got us into this mess in the first place. Another way of putting it is when, you know, I’m busy and Nancy is busy with our mop cleaning up somebody else’s mess — we don’t want somebody sitting back saying, you’re not holding the mop the right way. Why don’t you grab a mop, why don’t you help clean up.  (Applause.)  You’re not mopping fast enough.  (Laughter.)  That’s a socialist mop.  (Laughter and applause.)  Grab a mop — let’s get to work,”

The speech was given on October 15th and the DNC registered the name the next day.  I have to admit I laughed when I heard it and knew immediately it was a very well planned and worded speech to draw media attention…….but it didn’t.  Sure it received some media play but it was left to die.  It proves a few things.

One, the DNC is quick to register names. Two, they really don’t know what to do with them once they have them.  Three, even if they do have them, they have no idea how to use social media or the internet to promote them.

They should have gone to the David Letterman style of making things stick in your head. (no sex jokes please, I’m trying to make a point).  Say something and then repeat often.  So often, that even if people didn’t hear the original joke, they start laughing because it has been said so many times.  Obama should still be telling people to”grab a mop”. Instead, with it’s almost 2 million alexa ranking, it looks like the DNC should be dropping a mop and joining sponsoredtweets.
