Below is another look at a few recent domain flips and flops, with recent data courtesy of DN Journal and historical data from NameBio.
Flips
- CTR.org – Sold recently for $10,000 at DomainNameSales, vs $996 earlier this year at GoDaddy. Also sold for $859 back in 2007 at TDNAM. Based on the sales prices alone, the value was essentially flat for 7 years, then jumped up 10x in less than a year…….welcome to the world of domain names. Current owner is web-op.com, a website design & marketing firm.
- OfficeInsurance.com – Sold recently for $15,000 at DomainNameSales, vs $4,250 last year at GoDaddy. Parked. Acquired by OfficeTest.co.uk, “Office Test is the complete compliance solution to all your Health and Safety, Electrical Testing and Fire Safety needs.”
- PeakDesign.com – Sold recently for $8,895 at Sedo, vs $1,750 last year at NameJet. An upgrade from PeakDesignLtd.com, “The mission of Peak Design is to enable photographers, adventurers and outdoors enthusiasts to better capture the beautiful world around them.”
Flops
- WOIS.com – Sold recently for $6,055 at NameJet, vs $7,600 in 2011 at Sedo. Nearly $2,500 loss assuming 15% commissions, or nearly 1/3 loss. Parked. Whois shows Investments.org as the owner: “Established in 2008, Investments.org Inc., specializes in the buying and selling of high quality domain names. Please feel free to contact us about selling your domain name; We only buy .com, .net .org .co.uk and .ca domains at this time.”
Note: I didn’t do an exhaustive search of the ownership history of each domain. There are likely cases where there were multiple owners between the sales prices I list.
Good prices for two-word domains. I would have been curious to know traffic numbers for the previous websites in place before the sale.
