I’ve always felt that my nursery is a good representation of the US economy. I am actually a reporting member of the Producer Price Index but that’s not what I feel accurately depicts the economy. When sales are good at our retail centers the stock market seems to follow the same pattern in growth and vice versa. Right now I am experiencing a HUGE demand surge for product and growers, myself included, are having trouble keeping up with demand for products that take more than one year to produce. This in turn is causing prices to climb. Those prices are being passed on to retail. And retailers don’t have a problem increasing prices right now because nobody has increased prices since 2007. For the past 8 years all we’ve done is reduce package size and kept the same price making everyone think prices aren’t going up. Check the ounces in your cereals and yogurts and you’ll see, same shape, less ounces, same price. An additional problem is lack of labor. There are a ton of people looking for good help. The competition is heating up and salaries are up as much as 10-20% to attract new hires. To the point that the older staff has taken notice and asked for raises as well. In short, more money in people’s pockets, higher prices, higher profits for companies. Add in the cheap fuel and it’s looking like good times for the US economy IMO. Here are today’s names.
