You’ve heard me talk about looking for ways to add revenue and profit to the bottom line of my business. One of the things I added to our garden center was Christmas Trees. It’s a natural fit but we didn’t do them because the cheap trees offered no margins, we had to pay extra staff to stay an extra 3 weeks, needed to advertise, and when it was all said and done the profit dollars just weren’t worth doing. But then I decided to try selling only Fraser Firs, make our own wreaths and sell only cut branches from our fields. Fraser fir are the best Christmas trees but they tend to be expensive. I figured, lets promote the fact that we sell only the best and that if you wanted the best we would have the best prices on them and if you wanted a junk tree you could go to Wal-Mart or somewhere else. We also added a machine that drills a hole in the trunk and self levels the tree. That hold fits a stake stand that you drive in and have a tree and stand that is perfectly level with no adjusting. The stand is only $20 and can be used year after year……….as long as the tree is drilled with the machine. Which of course we have.
We also only carried a 100 trees and made them 20% cheaper than anyone in town. And we sold out in 10 days. The people that got the tree spread the word to their friends that they had purchased an incredible tree at our nursery and it only cost $XX. That first year we did radio and a few billboards around town. We pretty much broke even or even lost a little. The second year we brought in 250 and did radio and social media. Again we sold out in two weeks and barely had trees for our Christmas open house. We added live branches and roping from outside sources and they too sold out. Now we are on year four and we have 1000 trees and sold a ton of them this weekend and should sell out again. I only have to do some radio ads and a ton of social media and pretty much everyone in town now knows that they can get the best tree they have ever had for $40. And while they are there they buy some greens and wreath or two. Its becoming a family tradition for some families. We added a Santa for pictures to our open house and give free pictures to kids and pets. Our Christmas program has turned from a “lets keep people coming here and thinking of us as long as we can” program to a real money maker and important revenue source. I have plans for expansion in the future but its going to another step of investment and planning. Like all things business. There is an endless amount of ways to make money. Just have to have the ideas, the people, the time and the money to get it started. I can usually get two of those. Here are today’s names. Click for current price.

Have a name at auction and need more exposure? Send me an email. I Charge $10 per name per day. We may be able to help. If you have an auction you want to promote, email us for details.*All names chosen by me, Shane . (ie you click through and purchase a name you like) or an occasional paid listing. Everything I say is based on my own research or is opinion. Do your own due diligence. That means look it up yourself if you don’t think the stats or my opinion is correct. I hand choose my names but I am paid to make this list by both the auction houses, individuals that are auctioning names, and Godaddy affiliate links. Keep that in mind and only buy names that YOU think are good
When I am in Europe over Christmas I insist on a real Christmas tree, the missus hates the shedding. Last year I had one in the living room that was billed at 14 but was hitting 16 foot. Christmas in the Caribbean or LATAM doesn’t feel the same, you go shopping in air con and walk outside and it’s 100 in the shade. Fake trees are rubbish too, Christmas is 50% the smell of the tree.
Building up a seasonal part of your business from low $XXXX to $40,000 is no mean feat, congratulations.
Thanks Anthony. I think I need to start getting some 14 foot trees. We had a quite a few people asking for those giant trees. You just reminded me we need to go bigger 🙂 thanks for sharing
Turning it into a family tradition experience is a great idea. We get our tree from the same farm every year. I’m not even sure if it’s a good price because I don’t look around. it’s not just about getting a tree anymore, It’s now about going out and tagging a tree we like in November, then the first week in December we go cut it down, drink hot chocolate and cook hotdogs over the camp fire. The tree farm provides everything, they have successfully turned tree shopping into a Christmas tree event.
