I’ve been selling a lot of names that are about to expire or have recently expired on DropCatch. The sell through rate has been decent and it’s a good way to keep Godaddy from making all that free money.
There still seem to be a higher than normal amount of expired domains being bought up in Godaddy Closeouts, maybe their valuations has something to do with it, or maybe it’s just an investor buying everything up.
So if you want a chance to buy some names before they go through the Godaddy auction, take a look at the DropCatch auctions. You can give the money to me and Turncommerce instead of Godaddy the giant domain machine. Prices start at $15 for the private seller auctions, and not many names get more than 1 bid. That price includes at least 1 year of registration. It you buy the same name later at Godaddy auctions or closeouts you pay about the same price and will have less than one year of registration.
Forget the Godaddy valuations, here’s a real valuation on a name that I have at auction. GoCurious.com has a retail value of $999 and currently has one bid at $59.
Wanna know how I came up with that retail price? Because I just sold it on Afternic for $999 the other day. There’s a real buyer that paid for the name, but since I was lazy and didn’t remove the listing, the sale won’t be going through.
The auction will go to completion and the winner can then sell the name to the retail buyer. $999 less the commission is $799 take home. I figure someone can bid all the way to $500 and still make a nice profit. 🙂
And Happy Cinco de Mayo, but more importantly happy Birthday to my Sister Joanna. I can’t imagine and scenario where she’ll read this without me sending it to her directly, but it’s the thought that counts. She thinks I sell websites or deal in online black magic; we all still have a lot of work to do helping people understand what a domain even is.
Finally, I’m no longer rolling on the floor crying, I had a root canal done, or at least half a root canal. It has a temporary sealant so I have to go back in a few weeks. I’m not sure how it all works, but apparently they put some sort of medicine in the tooth before finishing the job. Turns out the problem was with the tooth behind the one they kept refilling. So now I’m thinking the dentist has been torturing my other tooth for no reason.

Have a name at auction and need more exposure? Send me an email. We Charge $10 per name per day. We may be able to help. If you have an auction you want to promote, email us for details.*All names chosen by us, Shane and Josh . (ie you click through and purchase a name you like) or an occasional paid listing. Everything we say is based on our own research or is opinion. Do your own due diligence. That means look it up yourself if you don’t think the stats or our opinion is correct. We hand choose the names but we are paid to make this list by both the auction houses, individuals that are auctioning names, and Godaddy affiliate links. Keep that in mind and only buy names that YOU think are good
Hi Josh,
Thanks for the tip.
I think there has been a “quiet” party – if I can put it like that – going on in closeouts and drops over the last few years, but it’s coming to an end now.
Reduced supply and increased competition, plus scripts, mean it’s getting tough.
That said, if you started today and saw the drops, you might go “OMG look at that!”
BlockCalender.com would be cooler without the typo
Good point, I can’t spell
