I had a great time at Namescon, the worst part of the whole trip was coming home to a snow covered vehicle sitting at the train station in 3 degree weather. At least it started, I was worried that the diesel might gel and it wouldn’t start.
On the flight home I sat next to a guy that worked as a software developer. He was also flying home after attending a conference in Vegas. I told him I had been at a Domain conference and then explained the whole business of the domain aftermarket and domain investing. He had a really good concept of domains and there value, but had never really considered the aftermarket. He even told me that he and his friends buy domains to make joke sites, like buying each others names and putting funny stuff on the sites.
He also had a few side projects on domains that were actually pretty good. It made me remember something that I think I’ve mentioned before, that domains can be good or great for a particular application, but not salable or most likely will never sell.
What I mean is that a domain can be good for a business or project by meeting all of it’s needs, memorable, applicable, brandable, if that’s the goal, but that doesn’t mean that anyone will ever pay more than $10 for the name.
We often talk about domains in terms of good and bad, but the more appropriate discussion should be “ok that’s a decent domain, but is there anyone out there that will buy it”. This concept applies to the full price range of aftermarket and unregistered domains. There are tons of “good” domains with a huge price tag that no business will ever buy. There are also tons, to the 10th power, of domains that are good that might not even be registered or really cheap, that will also never sell to any business large or small.
I do this wrong all the time. I see a domain that I think is good, buy or register it, without considering if any business will ever buy or use it. Most of the time I’m just guessing, but other times I get caught in the blatant trap of buying something that will never sell just because I think it’s “good”.
While there’s no real formula, ask yourself “Will this domain be desired by a business” before you even consider buying it.
Not only is there no formula for knowing if a domain will sell, there’s not always a right answer. I might think a domain will never sell, but that’s only based on my own limited world view and experience. Someone else with better incite into a certain sector or industry might see a domain and know for sure that it has a higher than average chance of selling. All we can do is learn, glean as much knowledge as we can from others that do well, try things and duplicate the things that work.
Keep in mind that I put names on the list that I think are good, funny or that I can attempt to write something witty. There will always be some that I think are good but will probably never sell. I do this because I’m quickly identifying domains that might have some value to someone. It’s your job based off of your life experience and knowledge to decide if anyone will ever but it.
