Here are a few more takeaways from NamesCon for those that may have not be there. I’ll try not to get myself in trouble as I write them
- Helga Neumer of NamesCon was a true pleasure to talk to. She honestly cared how things looked and how people felt about the experience. With people like her on the team NameCon is in good hands. I will say I went to other higher ups later in the night and one just reeked of pot. Nothing wrong with canna but breath was so stank I had to leave. I’m working with Helga from now on
- Margot Bushnaq of Brandbucket is one of my favorite people in the industry. So smart but generally quiet. We talked after about brainstorming some ways to get response times quicker on name acceptance. Another person that I enjoy working with. Like Helga, not offended by my viewpoints and views them as a way to improve not as a criticism
- Frank Schilling was nowhere to be found. Heard rumors but I don’t share rumors of personal stuff. The non rumors and fact is that he is getting divorced and there is a new person that’s been brought in to help run Uniregistry while he takes a little more time to deal with the most important things in life. Family
- Not sure how our relationship is perceived but I really like spending time with Andrew Alleman. We went out to dinner and I’m reminded each time why he’s been so successful in this industry. Very professional but really funny. He really is THE news of domain investing. I complemented him about doing a great job and he said “you’re not just saying this because I paid for dinner” This is to show him it wasn’t. (but I did appreciate it)
- Kate Buckely is the bell of the ball when she walks in the room. A smile every time and makes sure that she lets everyone know she is listening to them. Never seen such a positive person in my life. She makes everyone feel special she’s around.
- Park.io has a good one in Steve Webb. Mike Carson picked a good team mate. I didn’t even know he had help but there was someone that always had a Park.io hat so he was either a big Park.io fan, an employee or a partner. You could tell he had mad skills after a few questions. Then again, Mike only hangs with good coders
- There were quite a few people that didn’t make it and we made fun of them all. You don’t have to show up to make money but generally if you made a lot of money you showed up. Except for Drew Rosener. But he had enough feet on the ground representing Media Options that anything we said got back to him. I would get a text mid conversation. He was there without being there
- Sean Markey was someone I met that I felt like I knew but didn’t. Except that I did…kinda. I knew he wrote a news letter for Media Options but didn’t know where I knew him from otherwise. Turns out we had talked several times in the past and he had even won the ticket to NamesCon from DSAD last year. I suck. Sean’s a big, quiet guy but his knowledge of SEO and names with juice is as good as anyone I’ve ever talked to in this industry. He’s a great guy to know
- I have been supplanted as the best runner in the industry. Daren Ruse of Godaddy actually won a 100 mile race and he and his wife are legit runners. We talked for hours about preparation and lifestyle of being a runner. He’s what I wish I was 15 years ago. I really wish he lived closer. I’m going to buy a million domains just so he handles my account and we can talk more.
- There were so many great people I won’t even try to list them all. Old friends became better friends and new friends were added to the phone. I’ve already texted with so many of them I’m having trouble getting anything done at the nursery. I’m already looking forward to the next Meet up.

I wanted to keep the post positive. He did a dick move at the CEO of Godaddy’s keynote. At the end he pretended like he was going to ask a question but turned it into a commercial for Epik . Trying to make it about him instead of the speaker. I did an amazing job of avoiding him so I know nothing about their week other than that. I support Epik because I support Braden Pollock. He’s a good friend .

Ha. I am old. I sleep 7 plus hours a day so whatever my haggard tired look is, its probably from being out in the sun 8 hours a day for 25 straight years. The sun makes you look like an old sailor. And in hindsight its probably not best to do a 14 mile run at 4:30 am before a photo shoot. AND I was at a conference where sleep is a luxury. Doesn’t make you sparkle. PS I went to bed at 7:30 last night and I still look rough. I’ve decided to wear a flat bill hat to take some years off. That should do it
