Domain Spotlight:

Below is another look at a few recent domain flips and flops, with recent data courtesy of DN Journal and historical data from NameBio.

Flips

  • Porno.com – Sold recently by Rick Schwartz for $8,888,888, vs a $42,000 private acquisition back in 1997. A moderately successful deal……over a 200x return on the sales prices, but a 450x return after taking into consideration over $10 million the domain has earned him in parking & redirect revenue. Incredible. Retirement appears to be treating him well…..congratulations to Rick.
  • Jobsy.com – Sold recently for $3,000 at Sedo, vs $2,000 in 2011 at Sedo. Not a home run like the one above, but a profitable flip nonetheless. A job search site is in the works, with their current placeholder shown below.

Flops

  • Wardrobes.com – Sold recently for $15,198 at Sedo, vs $20,600 in 2012 at Sedo. If I assume 15% commissions on the recent sale, that’s over a $7,000 loss, which is near 40%. The domain is currently parked, and Whois shows the domain still in transfer.

Note: I didn’t do an exhaustive search of the ownership history of each domain. There are likely cases where there were multiple owners between the sales prices I list.
