So I had this great idea. I was going to raise a crop of the world’s hottest
peppers to sell. The are called the Carolina Reaper. You may have
seen the videos on the Internet of people eating one. It is so hot it burns
for hours and is so hot it makes you vomit and feel like you’re going
to die. A habanero or ghost pepper is child’s play compared to this thing.
Awesome. I know.
I decide to buy some seeds to get them started and see that they are $1
a seed at THE source. The originator of the plant. I can get them
elsewhere for less but I wanted true plants and seeds from a trustworthy source.
I’ve purchased seeds that were everything but what I thought I was buying.
Expensive but I’m worth it so I bought $100
worth. 3 different kinds. Chocolate Reaper, Yellow Reaper,
and the Carolina Reaper.
I knew I wouldn’t get all the seeds to grow but I’m a professional.
Less than half of them came up. So I went from selling the plants to
growing the plants so I could save myself $1 a seed and harvest.
A beautiful crop. Again, I’ve seen the videos. I knew I
had to be careful when getting the seeds. They
say wear gloves when harvesting, so I took their warning
and didn’t. I knew I was in trouble when I opened the first one.
I could feel tingling on my arms. Just the aroma burnt my throat
and made my forehead warm. I was having second thoughts about the glove
thing immediately. I know what you’re thinking. “He’s going to
get it in his eyes”. That was my only goal. Collect the seeds. Don’t
touch anything on my body.
The first couple only had 6 or 7 seeds in them and I figured that was
why they were so expensive. But then I hit the motherlode. A few
of them had dozens of seeds. But they were juicy. Juicy is not good
when the juice will mame you for life. I was fighting my greed of
collecting very expensive seeds, the manly side of me saying that all good things
are attained through risk, and my sane side telling me I am one
accidental swipe of the eye away from becoming blind man with zero
ability to play the piano.
I made it though all the peppers, had all the seeds in tissue paper
drying out, and headed in to wash up like I am performing surgery.
I scrubbed and scrubbed until all skin was removed. Done. I did it. I
got through the legendary Carolina Reaper with little more than
a slightly burning throat and a mild fever.
Two hours later I am loading a truck and I am starting to work
up a great sweat. I wipe my forehead and instantly my eyebrows
feel odd. And then they start to burn. Burn like someone, you
guesses it, sprayed pepper spray on my eyebrows. Evidently just the
fumes had accumulated in the hair of my eyebrows and all it needed
to activate was a little water and a hand to press it down onto my skin.
There really wasn’t anything I could do about it but wait it out. For the next
hour my eyebrows were hot. But I will say it was quite a rush. It’s hard
to describe but the slight pain kept me sharp and aware. To the point
I’m thinking of putting a dab of it on my brows every time I get tired.
But it wasn’t over.
One week later I’m driving and I nervously bite my nails. BAM!
My mouth is on fire. I know what you’re thinking again. Does he
not clean his fingernails? I do. I even have a tools in the shower
to do it. But it must not take much with this pepper. This pepper
is so hot that one week after I peeled them I still burnt my mouth

Your business insurance provider might be concerned about the seeds.
The chemicals you sell are covered by the suppliers product liability insurance. However, the seeds you grew might have a risk.
What happens if someone bought some and their young child touched them?
The risk/reward factor is not in your favor.
Nice idea. But, you might want to rethink about selling them one day.

All nurseries sell peppers that could harm.. Jalapeño, ghost, habanero all could burn if broken and wiped in eyes. Our plants are long gone before they ever set fruit. Many plants could be poisonous if eaten and in general most plants should never be consumed. After 151 years in business we know our risks very well. The biggest risk is not the plants. Its being open at all. We have more claims of someone simply falling in the parking lot than every single other risk involved. The population in the US is a high percentage elderly and they love plants. When the temperature rise above 85 they drop like flies. Those are the real risks. A couple extremely hot peppers are pretty easy risk control compared to 95 year old ladies laying all over your parking lot 🙂
