We all know what day it is in the US so I won’t say much other than it will be a memorable one.  Like when you have to choose between getting hit in the stomach or kicked in the balls.  On a brighter note, kind of.  I ran the NYC marathon this weekend and I was punished.  I don’t get sick very often but I got a cold two days before the race and felt pretty rough going in. I had spent all summer training and was with my best friends so I couldn’t not run the race.  I thought since it wasn’t too bad that I would be OK.  And I was for half.  And then it just fell apart.  I had nothing.  No desire, no reserves, no stamina.  I was 12 miles from the finish with no gas.  I decided to just walk off the course and take a taxi home.  But my daughter quit a few races this past year because she was hurting so bad that she thought it would be easier to walk off than to suffer the last mile.  I understand that sometimes you need to quit if you are going to hurt yourself but I’ve found over the years that your body protects itself.  It makes you tired, won’t let you think rationally because it wants you to stop. Running long distances and fast is not natural.  Training can usually teach your body that you will be fine but sometimes the mind wins.  I’ve been telling my daughter to push through races.

And here I was, in a similar situation trying to decide if going on was really going to hurt me or was my mind taking over.  I thought about it for miles.  Jogging, walking.  Thinking of what my daughter would say.  Thinking what it would take to keep going. Was it even physically possible.  I decided to find a place in the crowd to walk off and catch a taxi.  As I walked to the side a policeman came over and said.  “You came all the way here (I had a Indianapolis Shirt on), you have nothing else to do today, why don’t you just run it out?”   And that was all I needed.  Some random policeman just giving a little encouragement.

But I am here to say that it hurt and still hurts.  My time turned out fine.  I’m not going to die but man I’m sick.  The only thing worse than being sick is to push through a marathon while sick.  I’m sure most would say why would anyone do all that and suffer since you’re not getting paid or any reward of any kind? Sounds pretty stupid.  In short, it’s challenging. Generally, I’m good at it.  And life is all about pushing past uncomfortable. Life gets pretty boring if you only do things that are easy of give out some kind of reward.  But damn, I am uncomfortable today.  Here are today’s names.  Click for current price.

You’re smart to push yourself. As a marathon runner you must be use to pushing through pain. It’s one of the best lessons in life you could learn. I’m a disabled vet. nothing heroic, just got hurt on the job. I had to run a qualification run when I was enlisted, long story short, I had to run it with a broken ankle. I did the 1 3/4 under 11 minutes and passed, but my ankle has never been the same. Broke my back and my neck in other accidents and when consulting with a surgeon he told the best thing I could do was learn to live with the pain, it’s not going to get better with age. He was right on both counts. Working anything through takes effort and building that mental muscle to work through discomfort makes you stronger. And, with the state the world’s in, everyone needs to be.
