We highlighted a few developed sites on .Cars and .Auto domains over the last two weeks, and this week we’re taking a look at how some big companies are using their new gTLDs as redirects to existing sites. Only time will tell if they have stand-alone sites in the works, but it’s good to see usage from some of these big companies. The screenshots below are linked to the websites if you would like to check them out for yourselves.
Opel.Auto forwards to a lengthy URL: Opel.de/fahrzeuge/personenwagen/alle-fahrzeuge.html. Opel was founded over 150 years ago, employs over 34,000 people, and sold over 1 million cars in 2014.
Citroen.Auto forwards to Citroen.com/fr. Citroën is a 90+ year old French car manufacturer, with over 10,000 employees and nearly $60 billion in revenue.
Porsche.Cars forwards to Porsche.com. I don’t believe Porsche needs an introduction.
Ebay.Cars forwards to Ebay.com/motors. Although automotive-related sales have slipped at Ebay in recent years, sales were still estimated at around $10 billion in 2015.
On the domain front, both GoDaddy and Network Solutions use their .Cars and .Auto domains to forward to their relevant domain registration pages.
Setting up a redirect on an unknown domain hardly counts as “usage”. If a tree falls in the forest and nobody is there…..
I don’t agree. Is it as intensive of a use as a stand-alone site? Nope. But it’s infinitely better than a parked page or a domain that doesn’t resolve.
These are names that nobody will ever see, they could have done nothing and the result would have been the same.
