IKE’S LIST OF DOMAINS AT AUCTION FOR Saturday, September 7th

Escrow.com

Every time I hear about a .club sale from the Registry I’m reminded that the the registry is the domainer and I wonder why we even pay attention or care about the sale.

Alright, maybe it’s not a complete lack of caring, but the information doesn’t apply to anything I do. A registry selling domains at end user prices is a closed market as far as I’m concerned. Sure, maybe it gives some insight on the future of domains or is a measure of the adoption rate of new GTLD’s, but it’s a completely different sport when the registry is playing the role of the domainer.

We have this focused product (NGTLD’s) that in most cases is something specific, a word that can only be paired with a finite number of other words to make any sense. Then all of those possible word combinations are parsed down so that any that appear to have commercial value are sold a premium prices or end user retail.

If this is the case why would I look at anything else in the extension? Do I think I can find some great word combination at normal registration fee, that the people dedicated to nothing else but selling these things might have missed? Maybe it’s possible, but not worth the effort.

If I ran one of the registry’s I would be doing the same thing. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with them being the domainer. It’s probably the only way to make them work long term. Most of them are so specific or geared to a certain niche, that the only way they’ll make money is to sell the few best combinations at premium prices.

These extensions may have a place, hell maybe they’ll replace .com down the road, who knows, but as it stands I don’t even care about them other than a short passing fancy. I don’t have any skin in the game, I don’t want any skin in the game and I don’t think there’s any skin or game to be had.
