I sold a domain at BrandBucket over the weekend.
That’s not unusual, I think I’ve sold 3 with them in the last month or so. I usually don’t say anything about the sales as they haven’t been anything crazy or interesting, but this one had me concerned for a few minutes.
I got the escrow email with instructions for transferring the domain to the registrar that the buyer would be using, which was Godaddy. In the email they tell you where the domain currently lives, which is helpful to at least me, so I don’t have to figure it out. However the name that was sold was supposedly at a registrar called “Blue Razor”, at which point I’m thinking “shit”, well that’s obviously no longer my name.
I looked up the whois, and it had my info and the nameservers were still pointing to Brandbucket, which I already knew since the listing would have been taken down had someone else aquired the name and changed the nameservers.
So at this point I’m thinking, “some dumb bastard, picked up the name I forgot to renew, kept my whois info and left the nameservers pointing at BrandBucket” probably just to mess with me lol.
I googled Blue Razor, go to their site… and it’s owned by Godaddy. I’ve had the name for 5 or 6 years, so I can only assume it somehow internally transferred to this other registrar at some point within the Godaddy system? I have no idea.
Anyway the name was in my normal Godaddy account, I simply pushed it to the Brandbucket holding account, and that was that. I’ve never run across any issue like this before, it’s been awhile since I’ve even seen a wild west domain come up.
