Republican Presidential Candidate Rick Santorum Learns Tough Lesson About SEO

Presidential Candidate Rick Santorum has a problem… a big “pain in the ass”, if you will.

After coming from nowhere to lose out by just a few votes in the recent Iowa caucus, you can imagine that searches for his name on the major search engines has spiked in the past few days. Santorum’s problem, however, lies in what searchers are finding on Google, Bing, etc.

You see, back in the day (2003), Santorum decided to make some anti-gay comments in an interview with the Associated Press. After that, a website popped up asking users to redefine the term ‘Santorum’, and the chosen definition is displayed there. Needless to say, its not flattering. I wouldn’t go as far as to say DomainShane.com is a family friendly blog, but just because the definition might not be SFW, I’ll resist posting it here to avoid you an awkward conversation with HR. If you’d like to view it, you can check it out at spreadingsantorum.com.

Spreadingsantorum.com currently shows up on the first page of Google when searching the term ‘Rick Santorum’ and is the #1 result when searching the term ‘Santorum’. That is an issue for Rick, as he obviously doesn’t want potential voters seeing this info when people are seeking information on himself. His real issue, however, may be the fact that his campaign website is just catching up. You see, apparently Rick and his campaign ignored SEO on his site for an awfully long time and now he’s feeling the affects of it being outranked by a simple, one definition homepage. If you’d like detailed information about this, I’d encourage you to visit a terrific article by Danny Sullivan over at SearchEngineLand.com. He goes really in-depth about the mistakes Santorum’s campaign has made with their website, provides lots of screen shots, etc…in other words puts forth a lot more effort than I’m willing to, and why would I when Danny has already done such a great job?

Oh the politics season has arrived…and if you’re like me you say ‘so what?’. After America’s 2008 election debacle I decided to convert to Libertarian…which means I can have the true beliefs of most Americans without getting sucked into the hype of election campaigns because my vote really doesn’t matter. Have a good weekend folks.

  1. Funny thing is, it could be 50 years later and maybe people will be using that term.

    He’s been branded for eternity.

  2. No, your vote DOES matter. Others are voting Libertarian too. Vote your conscience and your vote counts.

    Tell your friends.
