A friend of mine called me up the night before last and asked if I could help put down sod at his new house. I laughed because I thought he was joking. I thought that because we had temps over 100 with heat index over 100 and was going to be the hottest day of the year. He wasn’t joking. He said he had it planned for a while and the truck was coming. I asked why he didn’t have my friend’s company put it down because they got such a great price on sod that it was only 50 cents a piece per sod to lay down more than what he paid. He said he didn’t realize it was that cheap. I could have gone on about why in the world he was doing it himself but I’m old and wise enough that there was no point in berating him. He asked for help so I needed to go help. He wouldn’t ask if he didn’t need it. He’s been really kind to me and it was the least I could do to go and put in a half day of hard work.
Of course I didn’t want to miss my run so I did 8 miles at 5 am and didn’t think it was bad. I’ve laid a lot of sod in my day so I put on my clothes that would take the dirt and headed over at 7 am. I laid more sod than the 3 kids he had helping. And the seams were tighter and the cuts were sharp. I put in about four and a half hours and we got 3/4 of the house down and laid 10 pallets. I figured they could take it from there. I’m not going to lie, in the afternoon my hands were sore from pulling sod and my shoulders from carrying it. Nothing a little THC cream and ibuprofen didn’t fix and I know he’ll remember who came and helped when he called. Besides, I actually enjoyed it and it was nice to get a little hard work and sweat in. It’s good for you
