So here’s another true story going in my book
When I worked at the Chicago Board of Trade I started as a runner. I had a college degree but my job was to literally run an order from a phone clerk to the broker on the floor, let him/her fill the order and run it back to the phone clerk who would let the customer know what the order filled at. We had computers but it was still faster to do it this way. There were “books” that were in each pit that got a copy of the trade and put it in so the world could see the fill but there wasn’t an automated system to say WHO got the fill. We literally just called them and told them.
Runners were all the same. Men and women who just graduated college that knew somebody on the floor that got them the job. The fact that it paid 2K a month didn’t stop people from taking the job. I had to take a second job just to pay my bills but it was an in. If you wanted to be a trader you had to meet traders. You had to move up to phone clerk and hope that your company would sponsor you or become a clerk to a trader and have them sponsor you. By sponsor I mean put up the million dollars you needed as collateral to trade. The going rate was 80/20. They kept 80% of everything you made. If you were really good you could get 60/40 but you were had to be a proven, profitable trader. Most of us were not.
It was an amazing experience. Maybe the most fun I’ve ever had. Surrounded by people that were exactly me. Addicted gamblers with no risk aversion that were quick with 4 digit math. That’s my wheelhouse. I can do 4 digit math like a computer. Advanced math. Nope. But quick calculations and trades I was strong. I was a nervous wreck in the beginning. Everyone there seemed so rich and confident. This was in 92 so the stories of Black Monday in 1987 still were told every day. The famous story was of a young guy (at the time) that placed a way out of the money put on the S & P just for fun. Then the stock market crashed and he made a few million dollars. The exact opposite of many traders. They say 10% of the floor blew their bag and had to either borrow more money or leave the floor. There was some pride in “blowing out”. They would proudly say they had lost everything 3 times and here they were again on the floor filling million dollar orders. They were the craziest men I’ve ever met and the only people that were riskier than me. I learned to be less risky but also to ride the winners. Many were incredible traders. Savants. Math geniuses and had spreadsheets that told them if this do this. Everything calculated
Just as often was the guy with nothing but a scrap sheet of paper and a clerk. Trading like crazy and telling the clerk what he did. Not writing or referencing anything. All in his head and his book never deeper than what he was going to trade that day and when the day ended he would sell out and start over. I could write a whole book on those 4 years. A cast of characters. Billions of dollars traded. And people too young to be doing it. It won’t be my whole book but its going to get the couple chapters its due
